lt on its slopes, issaid to be on the spot where tradition .claims that Noah planted his vineyard. The mountains of Ararat, Gen. 8:4, moreproperly refer to the entire range of ele-vated table-land in that portion of Ar-menia, and upon some lower part of thisrange, rather than upon the high peaksbefore mentioned, the ark more probablyrested. For (1) this plateau or rangeis about 6000 to 7000 feet high; (2) itis about equally distant from the Eux-ine and the Caspian Seas, and betweenthe Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean, and hence a central point for the dis-persion of the race; (3) the region isvolcanic in its origin; it does not riseinto sharp crests, but has broad plainsseparated by subordinate ranges ofmountains : (4) the climate is temper-ate, grass and grain are abundant, theharvests quick to mature. All thesefacts illustrate the biblical narrative.George Smith, however, places Araratin the southern part of the mountainseast of Assyria (Chaldean Account ofGenesis, p. 2*89). ARA ARC
Text Appearing After Image:
View of Ararat. (After ARAUNAH (ark ; a large ash orpine), or ORNAN, was a Jebusite wholived at Jerusalem and owned a thresh-ing-place or floor, where the temple wasafterward built. 2 Sam. 24:16. Da-vid bought it of him because the destroy-ing angel sent to desolate the nation, inconsequence of Davids sin of number-ing the people, stayed his hand at thecommand of God just as he had reachedthe floor. Araunah refused at first toreceive anything for it, but offered it tohim, together with oxen for sacrifices, and the timber of the threshing-instru-ments for fuel. David refused to receivethem as a gift, as he would not offer to theLord that which had cost him nothing. He therefore bought the oxen for fiftyshekels of silver, 2 Sam. 24: 24, andthe whole place for six hundred shekelsof gold, 1 Chr. 21: 25, and offered hissacrifices, which were accepted and theplague stayed. 2 Sam. 24:23 maybebetter translated : The whole, 0 king, does Araunah give unto the King.
