14:25. There are extensive ruinsat the place, which is now called EskiKalessi by the Turks. PERGAMOS (place of nuptials),a celebrated city of Mysia, about 3 milesnorth of the river Caicus and 20 milesfrom the sea. It was noted for its wealth,which had its origin, it is said, from thetime that 9000 talents were entrusted byLysimachus, a successor of Alexander,to the keeping of Philataerus, who (b. c.283) appropriated the money, declaredhimself independent, and founded asuccessful dynasty, which lasted forover four centuries, when the treasurewas bequeathed to the Bomans. Thecity was celebrated for (1) literarycharacter; (2) idolatry. It had avastlibrary of 200,000 volumes (rolls), rival-ling that at Alexandria, but Antony pre-sented this library to Cleopatra, whenit was removed to Egypt, and, with theAlexandrine Library, destroyed by Ca-liph Omar. PER PER gamena, or paper of Pergatuos. Thecity had, in a grove near by, a clusterof famous temples dedicated to Zeus,Minerva, Apollo, Venus, Bacchus, andiEsculapius. One of the seven churchesof Asia was at Pergamos, where Satansseat is. Rev. 1: 11; 2 : 12-17. The termSatans seat some regard as referringto the worship of ^Esculapius, whosecommon emblem was the serpent. Oth-ers think it denotes the particular wick-edness of the various idolatries and thetrials which had come upon the church,one faithful member, Antipas, having al-ready suffered martyrdom. The city isnow called Bergama, and has a popula-tion of from 20,000 to 30,000, of whichabout 2000 are Christians, having sev-eral churches.
