d the usages towhich they were applied, as has been done withrespect to the balneae; or indeed to discover asatisfactory mode of reconciling their constructivedetails with the description which Vitruvius hasleft of the baths appertaining to a Greek palaestra,or to the description given by Lucian of the bathsof Hippias. All, indeed, is doubt and guess-work ;the learned men who have pretended to give anaccount of their contents differing in almost all theessential particulars from one another. And yetthe great similarity in the ground-plan of the threewhich still remain cannot fail to convince even asuperficial observer that they were all constructedupon a similar plan.
