COLONIES- made here; and as a large immigration of gold-seekers took place, it became necessary, in orderto protect life and property, to establish a Govern-ment. The trading license of the Hudsons BayCompany was revoked, and a colony establishedunder 21 & 22 Vict. c. 99. Estimated populationfrom 40,600 to 50,000, of whom all but 8,360 werenatives. Near British Columbia, and lying off its south-ern boundary, is Vancouvers Island. It has anextreme length of 275 miles, and a breadth varyingfrom 40 to 50 miles. Its capital is Victoria, a freeport. The area is estimated roughly at about15,000 square miles. Vancouvers Island waserected into a British colony in 1859 ; and as coalis found here, it is probably destined to be ofgreat significance as a trading station. Vancou-vers Island is mountainous, the highest pointsreaching 16,000 feet.
