Note. — The letters in Fig. 2 denote the same parts of themachine as in Fig. 1. The crank F being turned by the action of the wire G,the cylinder C is made to perform half a revolution, and thewire staple raises the hammer by coming in contact with thecrook in the spring to which the hammer is attached. Thehammer then strikes the bell, and the spiral spring or check-springD forces the cylinder back to its first position, and causes thehammer to rise again as before and to fall a second time onthe bell. By these semi-revolutions of the cylinder, the labelsuspended from its spindle, and inscribed with the number ofthe room where the bell is rung, is made to vibrate. Onehundred and forty bells, arranged in this manner, occupy aspace fifty-seven feet long, one foot high, and six inches deep.
