FLINTSHIRE. 67 village, near which Is Hope Caftle, featedon the Alen, a fmall river that empties itfelfinto the Dee. It is in the parifh of Eaflyn,oiherwiie called Queen Hope. King Edward theFirft in his grant, made in the tenth year of hisreign to John earl of Warren and Surrey, of thelordfhips of Bromfield and Yal, excepts out ofit the caftle and land of Hope, referving them tohimfelf and his heirs, which before wa^part ofBromfield; which Griffith and Llewellyn, fonsof Madoc, held at the beginning of the war, ei-ther by themfelves or their guardians. Into thiscaftle the faid king retired when the Welfti hadfurprized his army. It is now in the poileftion ofthe earl of Derby. Caergwrley has four fairs, namely, on Shrove-Tuefday, A.ay j6, Auguft 12, and Odtober 27,for cattle.
