en feveral of thechimnies are ftill ftanding. Another part (howslittle more than the foundations, which, had theybeen compleated, the caftle would have been of avery large extent. The reafon it was left in thiscondition was, that his grace was beheaded in theyear 1521, before he had time to complete his de-fign. Of this ftru6lure we have given a view en-graved on copper. This town, in the time of the late civil wars,was fortified for the king, by William St. Le-gar, to curb the garrifon of Glocefter. Thechurch is large, and built in the form of a ca-thedral, with fpacious ifles on each fide, and acrofs. It has three chancels, and a tower at theweft end, which is high and beautiful. There arefour fmall alms-houfes, for the maintenance offifteen poor people j but two of them have littleor no endovvment; the other two have fo muchland fettled on them, that each of the poor havea (hilling a week and their coals. Oldbury is a village feated upon the Severn,two miles well: of Thorrbury, and is thought by-fome to have been a Roman ftation. There arein this pariili two military camps, the greater ofwhich is a large Roman fortification : the otherwas where the church now^ ftands. The trajec-tus, or paffage over the Severn, is thought to haxebeen here. The church has two iile?, and had afpire fteeple, which was blown down in the greatftorm in 1703. The road continues to run fouthward, but atan inconfiderable village, named HAiMBRooic,turns fouth-weft, and in that dire£lion extends toBristol, part of which being in this county, ?ndpart in Somerfetihire, we fhall defer the defcrip-tion of it till we come to treat of the towns of the)aft mentioned county.
