About four miles to the north of Uttoxeter isCroxton-Abbey, which was eredled by Ber-tram de Verdun, in the year 1176, for monks ofthe Ciftercian order, and he endowed it with landsand revenues, which were valued at the fuppref-fion at 901. 5 s. II d. a year by Dugdale, andat 103 1. 6 s. 5 d. by Speed. There are magni-hcent ruins ftill remaining, which fhew that itmud have been a fpacious and beautiful ftruc-^ure. The prefent owner is the earl of Maccief-•k-id. About four miles north-eaft of Croxton-abbeyis Che ADLE, which is feated at the fpring head ofthe river Terne, which falls into the Dove nearUttoxeter.
