The IIeiivey Islands arc situated be-tween 19^ and 21° south latitude, and 156and 161° west longitude, and contain a pop-ulation of 16,000 or 18,000. The largest anduK^st important island of the group is Raro-tonga. This beautiful island remained un-known until 1823. It was then discoveredby the Rev. Mr. Williams, an English mis-sionary. It is a mass of mountains, manyof which are high, and remarkably romantic-The island is about 30 miles in circumference,and has several good harbors for boats. Itspopulation is about 7.000. Mangaia is 20 or 25 miles in circumfer-ence, and contains between 2,000 and 3,000inhabitants. Atiu is about 20 miles in circumference,hilly, but not mountainous.
