English: A copy of the Psalms in Armenian, Isfahan, 1638, by Khachatur Kesaratsi
Սաղմոս ի Դաւթի Other Titles: Saghmos i Dawt’i. Bible. Psalms. Armenian. 1638. Shelfmark: Bodleian Library Vet. Or. f. Arm. 1 Holding Institution: Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford Date Statement: 1638 Place of Origin: ի քաղաքն Շօշ, յանապատն Ջուղայոյ (i k’aghak’n Shosh, yanapatn Jughayoy) Iran, Iṣfahān Origin Note: According to the colophon, vardapet Xač‘atur Kesarac‘i printed this volume “in the city of Šōš in the desert of J̌uła [New Julfa of Isfahan] in the year 1087 [= 1638 CE]” with the help of his students, “master Hakobčan, tēr Yovhannēs the priest, and tēr Mik‘ayel, and Yovsēp‘”. Vrej Nersessian believes that this information implies that the publication was made with the help of the equipment made at the monastery: “If this is so, it is the only known copy of the first book ever printed in Iran…” (Nersessian, p. 41). Despite this careful wording in the introduction, in the description of the volume, Nersessian states that “[t]his is the first book printed in Persia and the whole of the Middle East” (p. 49).
