Title
A copper alloy medieval strap end
Description
English: A cast copper alloy strap end, dating to the medieval period. The strap end is rectangular with a rounded terminal. At the attachment end, it splits into two to accomodate the leather or fabric strap. Two rivet holes are visible on the underside of the plate to secure the strap end. The upper surface of the strap end is decorated with a central vertical moulded rib and marginal moulded ribs. The ends of the ribs protrude slightly beyond the body of the strap end. The strap end measures 27mm in length, 16mm in width, 5mm in thickness. It weighs 6.2g.

Helen Geake writes: From the image, it seems likely that this strap-end is in fact early-medieval and an example of Thomas's Class E, Type 3 (Finds Research Group Datasheet 33, 2004). This type has a central midrib which can protrude slightly beyond the body of the strap-end, and dates broadly to the tenth century. The date-range has therefore been changed in the fields below.
