Title
A copper alloy Langton Down brooch
Description
English: A copper alloy Langton Down type brooch dating to the early Roman period. The bow comprises a flat rectangular strip of copper alloy terminating in a rounded foot. The bow is decorated with at least two vertical grooves. The head of the brooch is formed from a sheet of copper alloy wrapped around to form a cylindrical casing for the spring mechanism. The wings have no end plates. The pin is missing. The catchplate is also missing although a scar reveals that it reached half way up the bow. The brooch measures 55mm in length; the bow has a maximum width of 8mm; the wings a width of 16mm. The brooch has a dark orange patina with patches of dark green. The original surface of the brooch remains in very few areas.
