Title |
A copper-alloy Greek coin, probably a modern replica. |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy Greek coin, probably a modern replica. The obverse carries a head of Hera, facing right; the reverse an eagle with wings extended behind, holding a snake in its beak. There is no legend. It is 15.6mm in diameter and 3.1mm thick. It weighs 3.69gm. A similar coin but struck in silver and with the bust facing the opposite way is listed on <a href="http://www.anythinganywhere.com/commerce/coins/coinpics/ancgk-classgk.htm">http://www.anythinganywhere.com/commerce/coins/coinpics/ancgk-classgk.htm</a> as an ancient greek coin; a drachm dating from 338 - 308 BC, BMC number 109, 38. Another example with the bust facing right can be seen on <a href="http://www.museumsurplus.com/DiscountMaterialsPAGE2.htm,">http://www.museumsurplus.com/DiscountMaterialsPAGE2.htm,</a> also in silver. Since this example is made of bronze, and is not very well patinated, it is probably a modern replica of these ancient coins. |
