Description
English: A complete struck / hammered copper alloy Irish possibly a shilling, of James II (AD 1685 to AD 1691), issued as part of the 'Brass Money' or 'Gunmoney' coinage. The date and the month are illegible.

Obverse: laureate and draped bust left.

[IACOBVS II] DI GRA[TIA].

Reverse: Crown with two sceptres crossed behind, XII above JR either side S below probably representing September.

[MAG . BR . FRA . ET . HIB . REX].


The diameter is 23mm and the weight 4.23g.


These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James was attempting to recover the English throne and were supposed to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged.
