Title
A complete post medieval copper alloy eight maravedis 'co' coin of Philip IV (AD 1621-1665).
Description
English: A complete post medieval copper alloy eight maravedis 'cob' coin of Philip IV (AD 1621-1665). The obverse has a crude portait of Philip IV and the reverse has a crowned shield with the arms of Leon and Castille. The value of the coin VIII to the left of the shield and the mint mark to the right.

These are often called 'cob' coins after the Spanish word for copper which is 'cobre': they were crudely made in Spain initially and later in the Americas for use in the Spanish colonies. The flans are usually, as on this example, an irregular shape, slightly squared off in places, and in this case split around the edges.

Other 'cob' coins on the database are ESS-B86936, LANCUM-2AE7C4, IOW-DC2625, SF-FCAFFB, NMGW-669D7B and SUR-4E17B8.

Dimensions: diameter: 18.01mm; weight: 1.85g.
