GEBMAN EMPIRE 431 Just bej-ond the great K.3nd in the Rhine is Frankfort, on anavigable tributary, the Main, along which lies the easiest routefrom the Rhine valley to the Danube. Since the railway from theGerman plain to the upper Rhine passes Frankfort, it is a centre ofimportant trade routes, and therefore one of the leading trading andbanking centres in western Germany. It has long been a prominentcity and was the capital of the old German Confederation (p. 418). Railways to the Danube pass through Munich, the capital of thekingdom of Bavaria. Although so far to the south, and so distantfrom coal, Munich is the third city in size in the realm. It is on thetrade routes from Germany to Italy and to Austria, and is accord-ingly an important railway centre. Much of its renown is due to itsart collections and its art industries, such as work in bronze, gold,silver, glass painting, and porcelain manufacturing.
