Title
A complete copper-alloy sestertius of Commodus, dating c. 180-181 AD. Reece period 9, mint of Rome.
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy sestertius of Commodus, dating c. 180-181 AD. Reece period 9, mint of Rome. Reverse; PROV DEOR TR P V IMP IIII COS II PP S-C, Providentia standing left, holding sceptre in left hand and wand in outstretched right hand, globe at feet. The coin is preserved in extremely good condition, with an even green patina covering most of its surfaces. The reverse legend for this coin does not seem to have been previously noted, with the closest comparable examples reading PROV DEOR TR P VI IMP IV COS II PP S-C. This coin, therefore, presumably dates one year previously to these (181-182) due to the denotion of Commodus' second year of consulship. It is the opinion of the recorder that this piece should therefore be considered a variant of RIC vol. III, p. 404, no. 312.
