Title
A complete cast copper alloy strap junction dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period (late 1st century BC – early 1st century AD).
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy strap junction dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period (late 1st century BC – early 1st century AD). The harness fitting comprises three conjoined loops with a central horse’s head projecting from the upper edge on the front surface; above the lower loop and between the two upper loops. The horse’s head is decorated with grooves detailing the mouth and mane and a ring and dot for the eye on each side of the head. Two further ring and dots also decorate the junction between the upper and lower loops. The copper alloy has an even mid-green patina.

Such strap dividers are thought to date to the late Iron Age, to the late 1st century BC or early 1st century AD. Examples recorded on this database include <>NARC-565894, <>HAMP2961, HAMP-7794C4 and in the literature, Bushe-Fox (1926, 47/Plate XV; no. 29) - all of these have a anthropomorphic face instead of the horse’s head.

Dimensions: length: 31.20mm; width: 34.60mm; thickness: 14.47mm; weight: 17.19g.
