Title |
A complete cast copper-alloy late Roman artefact known as a 'nail-cleaner strap-end'; |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper-alloy late Roman artefact known as a 'nail-cleaner strap-end'; it could have been either or both. It is sub-rectangular in plan and rectangular in section. At one end is a pair of prominent crescent-shaped lugs. They are characteristic of the main group within this object type (Eckardt with Crummy 2006, 87; fig. 3).
Below the neck of the object the sides gradually expand outwards towards the base. The object is split from the base up to just below the neck. The strap would have been held in this split and the rivet which secured it is intact. The upper surface is decorated with incisions. The crescent lugs are decorated with punched dots approximately ten of which follow the curve of the crescent. Between the two lugs is a ring and dot from which three lines of punched dots radiate upwards. Below the neck of the object in the centre is an incised diamond shape with an X in the centre. Below this is a larger incised X which continues into the corners of the base of the object. On each side of the X is a ring and dot below which are four incised lines which mark the edges of the object and are angled down. In the lower central space of the X the small rivet for attachment can be seen. The reverse of the object is undecorated. It has a smooth mid green patina. 'Nail-cleaner strap-ends' have been argued to be unique to late Roman Britain (Hawkes with Grainger (2003, 101; ref. 12). |
