English: A complete but slightly broken cast domed 'beehive' thimble, dating to the 14th/ 15th century AD (length/ height: 21.7mm; diameter at base: 21.3mm; thickness of wall at base: 1.2mm; weight: 9.10g). There are two slightly incised lines running around the base, with irregular and slanted lines of indented dots, which continue up to and around the rounded conical tip at the top. There are numerous breaks/ fractures running up from the base, but the thimble is only slightly worn and in a fair condition with a dark green patina. Similar examples are illustrated in E. F. Holmes' 'Sewing Thimbles', Finds Research Group 700-1700 Datasheet 9. It is suggested by Holmes that domed shaped thimbles are found in Britain in contexts from about 1350, which is later than on the Continent where thimbles are known to have been made during the 13th century. It is possible that leather guards were used in preference to metal ones. The casting of domed thimbles was abandoned in the 16th century AD. |
