Title
A complete Post Medieval cast iron carpenter's axe head (17th century).
Description
English: A complete Post Medieval cast iron carpenter's axe head (17th century). This axe head has a triangular socket for the handle and symmetrical triangular blade with curved cutting edge. The socket has a flat back with an irregular split suggesting contemporary damage. There are two rounded lobes projecting from the lower edge of the socket. The blade is decorated or marked on one side with a band of cross-hatching within a linear border above and below. The cross-hatching and border has been created stamped using the same tool which has a long, thin blade possible a chisel. This band of decoration sits just after the socket. Between this band and the cutting edge are two maker’s marks, both the same. They may be a rectangular stamp with two pellets, or they may be a conjoined OC. Along the side of the blade a seam is visible where the iron has been folded over to create the socket and then hammered together to form the blade. The iron is in good condition with no rust. There are some notched in the cutting edge and one corner is missing; it is not clear whether this is contemporary or later damage.

Geoff Egan notes that the conjoined OC maker’s mark is known from knife blades, the mark is different to this one but the mark would have to be scaled up for the larger object. The detail of the mark is obscured because one end of the stamp is missing.

Dimensions: length: 149.98mm; width of cutting edge: 127.27mm; thickness of socket: 47.70mm; weight: 994.2g.
