Title
A complete Medieval copper alloy thimble dating AD 1400-1550.
Description
English: A complete Medieval to Post Medieval copper alloy thimble dating AD 1400-1550. The thimble is a cast heavy duty thimble, there are two diametrically opposed notches in the rim, Egan (1998:265) writes "The notches on Nos 829-31 may have been from some device to hold the thimble firmly during lathe turning or the adding of the pits." The pits are hand-drilled in a spiral and they do not cover the peak. The thimble has a thickened rim with margin of 2.85mm between the base and the pits. The thimble appears to be unused and still has filling marks on the peak.

Similar heavy duty thimbles can be seen in Holmes (1988:1 fig. 2) and Egan (1998:267 fig 830)

Dimensions: diameter: 21.19mm; height:19.42mm; weight: 10.84g.

Similar thimbles on the database are BUC-CF1F95, BERK-C03033 and IOW-DBFDC8.
