Title
A complete Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval cast copper alloy domed thimble (15th-16th century AD).
Description
English: A complete Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval cast copper alloy domed thimble (15th-16th century AD). The domed thimble has a wide margin between the base and the pits. The pits are hand-drilled in a spiral and they do not cover the peak. The pits are fairly even and none are perforated completely. The peak of the thimble has been decorated with an openwork design of three equally-spaced trefoils arranged pointing inwards towards the centre point. Between each trefoil is an incised line; the lines meet at the centre point. The thimble has a dark red-brown patina and the base has cracked in three places.

Holmes (1999) suggests that decoration in thimbles was established from the 15th century onwards, reaching its peak during the 16th century when particularly fine thimbles were imported from Nuremberg. Decorated thimbles, such as these, were clearly intended for light work, in contrast to ring thimbles, which are used for working thicker textiles and are never decorated.

Dimensions: length: 20.44mm; thickness: 1.08mm; diameter: 15.26mm; weight: 3.87g.
