ethe supply of black labor by colonizing the black laborer out of the coun-try, and by precisely so much you increase the demand for and wages ofwhite labor. But it is dreaded that the freed people will swarm forth and cover thewhole land. Are tney not already in the land? Will liberation makethem any more numerous? Equally distributed among the whites of thewhole country, and there would be but one colored to seven whites. Couldthe one in any way greatly disturb the seven? There are many commu-nities now having more than one free colored person to seven whites andthis without any apparent consciousness of evil from it. The District ofColumbia and the States of Maryland and Delaware are all in this condi-tion. The District has more than one free colored to six whites, and yetin its frequent petitions to Congress I believe it has never presented thepresence of free colored persons as one of its grievances. But why shouldemancipation South send the free people North? People of any color

BATTLE OF ANTIETAM. This engagement was fought on September 17, 1862, by the Confederateforces under General Lee, who commanded 51,844 men, and the Unionforces under General McClellan, who commanded 75,316 men. Two dayspreviously Lee had abandoned Harpers Ferry, and massed his forces, whichhad hitherto been divided, in the Antietam valley, near Sharpsburg, Md.,where he was joined by Jackson. At dawn on the 17th, Hooker attackedJacksons division, but was met with stubborn resistance. Hooker him-self was seriously wounded, but his forces were winning, when Lee weakenedhis centre by dispatching fresh troops to Jacksons assistance, and the Fed-eral forces were once more checked. On the other fronts, however, theConfederates had decidedly the worse of the encounter. The ever cautiousMcClellan did not push the conflict on the 18th, and on the 19th Lee removedacross the Potomac. It is estimated that the Union loss was 2,108 menkilled and 9,549 wounded, whereas the Confederate loss was 2,700
