The Boxer upris-ing, the story of which is told in the article entitled Boxers, in theEncyclopedic Index, caused increased diplomatic intercourse between theyoung Republic and the immemorial Empire. Other nations regardedChina as the vandals regarded a fallen city ; there was loot to be had andeach with steel in hand determined to get his share. The indemnity firstdemanded was $735,000,000; through the chivalrous good offices of theUnited States the amount was lowered to $387,500,000. Then our share inthis amount was remitted entirely. The incidents of our intercourse withChina are narrated in the articles Chinese Indemnity, Chinese Loan, Chinese Immigration, China, China, Treaties with, in the Ency-clopedic Index.
