| Description |
English: A claggy day on Beinn Bhreac Near the summit which is visible about 100m away. The summit area is craggy with lots of small hills. The highest point is unmistakeable, and will still be once the triangulation pillar falls from the narrow ridge upon which it stands (it is undermined somewhat).
The complex contouring of these moors is challenging for navigation, especially if you are lucky enough to catch them in the mist. Today felt more like orienteering (although with very different mapping) than hill walking; the grid squares replacing controls. The OS use contours just to show height, so there was none of the interpretation of the appearance of the land that a good orienteering mapper provides - this is a subtle difference, but it changes the navigation challenge completely. The 1:25000 map is more than adequate once you get a feel for how big a feature needs to be to get on to it though. A great day to leave the GPS behind. |
