, they . catch numbers of field-mice as well as insects, and they hunt moths in the twilight, while in the daytime they capture dragon-flies and grasshoppers. 2* 20 THE RED-FOOTED KESTREL. Another common name for the species is the Orange-legged Hobby, but it is wrong to speakof this bird as a Hobby, as the latter is really ofthe true Falcon type, whereas the subject of ouressay is essentially a Kestrel. The male isfigured in the accompanying picture, and thefemale is very different in plumage. The male isslaty grey, with chestnut thighs, and under tail-coverts ; while the female is paler in colour, andhas the grey upper parts barred with darker grey.The head is chestnut, and the entife under surfaceis light chestnut, paler on the throat. The egg, which is figured in our plate of thenatural size, is very much like that of the Kestrelof the British Islands. Those of the Red-footedKestrel are somewhat smaller, and are not socoarsely grained. They are, moreover, of ayellowish red colour.
