Text Appearing Before Image:
rudent cockswain was promptly-obeyed, and the boat cautiously drew off to a dis-tance, leaving to the animal a clear space while underits dying agonies. From a state of perfect rest, thei terrible monster threw its tail on high as when insport, but its blows were trebled in rapidity and vio-lence, till all was hid from view by a pyramid offoam, that was deeply dyed with blood. The roar-ings of the fish were like the bellowings of a herd ofbulls, and, to one who was ignorant of the fact, itwould have appeared as if a thou, sand monsters wer&engaged in deadlv combat behind the bloody mistthat obstructed the view. Gradually these efforts-subsided, and, when the discolored water again settlec^down to the long and regular swell of the ocean, thefish was seen exhausted, and yielding passively to its-fate. As life departed, the enormous black mass-rolled to one side; and when the white and glisten-ing skin of the belly became apparent, the seame«well knew that their victory was achieved.
