Title
a cast lead spindle whorl of unknown date
Description
English: A crudely cast, lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval date. It is conical, the top of the cone being truncated. There is a circular perforation, somewhat off-centre. There is no decoration. The whorl is 28.5mm in diameter and 11mm high. It weighs 37.54gm. This shape is not listed among examples from Coppergate or from Roman sites according to Walton Rogers (2007), so a Medieval date is suggested, but spindle whorls are very difficult to date as few are found in secure dated contexts.
