Title
A cast copper alloy purse bar, dating to the 15th/ 16th century.
Description
English: A cast copper alloy purse bar in two parts (overall length: 80mm; diameter of bar: 4.1mm; diameter of terminals: 13.2mm; weight: 25.79g). One side of the bar is bent round to a right angle with one moulded terminal at the end, and the sub-rectangular case to hold the swivel loop (now missing) at the other. The bar is broken beyond the casing, with the other bar being straight with the moulded terminal also present at the end. The artefact is in a worn and corroded condition with a patchy dark green patina.

There is a similar example illustrated in Margeson's 'Norwich Households: The Medieval and Post-Medieval Finds from Norwich Survey Excavations 1971-1978', page 42, ref no 291. This example was dated between 1400-1600 AD, and is classified as a Type B which have no attachment plates, short bars but sometimes have frames. The use of cloth or leather purses, suspended from the belt by a swivelling loop and held expanded by metal bars often with frames attached, seems to have been popular from the 15th century onwards (page 40).
