Title
A cast copper alloy probable hair pin, possibly dating from the 2nd/ 3rd century AD.
Description
English: A incomplete cast copper alloy probable hair pin (length: 33.3mm; diameter/ circular section: 5mm; weight: 2.62g). Decorated with a spherical head and two collars underneath, these is a rather simple probable hair pin. Below the last collar, the remains of the shank continue for 19.6mm until it breaks at a slant. Generally, the probable pin is in a worn and poor condition with areas of bronze disease around the head, collars and at the break. The artefact has a dark green/ brown patina.

Similar artefacts are illustrated in Nina Crummy's 'Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester 1971-9', 1983, pages 28-9. These finds also have the same decoration at the head of the pin, and mostly date from the 2nd/ 3rd century AD.
