A cast copper alloy oval buckle with outside ornate edge, dating to the 13th/ 14th century AD.
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy oval framed buckle with ornate outside edge (length: 24.7mm; width: 29.2mm; thickness: 6.3mm; weight: 9.18g). With an offset and narrowed bar, the outside edge is unevenly grooved parallel where the pin would have originally rested in a constriction in the centre. There are two slightly pointed knobs either side of this grooved decoration. The complete copper alloy pin is bent back on itself and no longer rests on the outside edge. The buckle is slightly worn and in a good condition with a dark brown patina, due to the artefact being probably coated in a substance.

Similar examples are illustrated in Egan & Pritchard's 'Dress Accessories: Medieval Finds from Excavations in London c. 1150-c. 1450', 1991, pages 72-4, ref no 293 & 301. Both are dated between AD c. 1230 - c. 1400.
