Title |
A cast copper alloy object possibly Roman to Post-Medieval date. |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy object possibly Roman to Post-Medieval date. The object consists of a hooked anchor-shaped zoomorphic terminal. The zoomorphic element appears to be of two bird heads with feather effect casting leading in towards the center. An openwork triangle seperates the two zoomorphic ends. The necks of the creatures come together in the central shaft which is broken. The reverse of the object is flat and undecorated, suggesting that it may have been designed to lay flat against something.
The function of this object is currently unclear. It may be some type of hanger but investigation into parallels is ongoing. The design of the animal heads and the patina suggest a Roman date, although similar animal head designs may be seen on Post-medieval 'snake' buckles of the 17th and 18th century. Another example of this object which can be found on the database is BERK-969A06. |
