Title
A cast copper alloy domed or 'beehive' thimble, dating to the 15th/ 16th century AD.
Description
English: A cast copper alloy domed or 'beehive' thimble (diameter at base: 20.9mm; length/ height: 21.5mm; thickness: 1mm; weight: 5.03g). The thimble has a slightly rounded point which slopes downwards to the larger diameter of the artefact at the base. There are small, irregular and uneven circular indentations across the outer surface which do seem to be of a certain pattern, particuarly roughly concentric rings of markings around the domed tip. These markings become less frequent near the tip of the thimble. There are a few cracks/ breaks running upwards from the base, one of which is surrounded by increased levels of corrosion. The thimble is slightly worn but in a fair condition, with a dark green patina.

Domed type and cast thimbles have been found dating from the 14th century in England. Some domed thimbles were made for light duty and others, mostly larger and with thicker sides, for heavy duty and the size of the holes varies accordingly. All drilled holes are usually circular (E.F. Holmes,'Sewing Thimbles' - Finds Research Group 700-1700 datasheet 9, 1991, pages 1-2).
