Title
A cast copper alloy buckle dating from 1650-1750 AD.
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shoe or knee buckle (length: 30.2mm; width: 28.7mm; thickness: 4mm; weight: 4.30g). A trapezoidal buckle with a drilled frame for separate iron spindle. The frame itself has been decorated with moulded pin rest at each end of the length and concave, bifid sides with moulded bifid knops around the spindle holes. Remains of what is likely to be the chape are visible on the spindle. The underside of the buckle is plain and undecorated.

The overall condition of the buckle is fair with little evidence of corrosion apart from the iron spindle across the buckle's width. Most of the chape and all of the pin are now missing. The patina is a green/ grey colour.

Similar examples are illustrated in R. Whitehead's 'Buckles' book, particularly on pages 98-9. Specific parallels are seen on Ref Nos 614, 615, 618 & 619. These buckles have been dated from c. 1660-1720, but a slightly broader date range needs to be identified.
