Title
A cast copper alloy Medieval mirror case, 1270-1350 AD.
Description
English: A cast copper alloy Medieval mirror case, 1270-1350 AD. The artefact consists of two halves of a decorated hinged metal-cased compact mirror. Both halves are cast discs, with a flat decorated exterior surfaces and a flat interior recessed within walls. At one point on the outside edge of one half of the mirror case is a lug. On the other half is the remains of another lug. This was held together with a pin forming a hinge. The pin which was with the object fell out on being removed from the ground causing the hinge to break. On the opposite side of one half are two integral lugs which are oval in profile. The other half of the case has a single integral oval lug which slots neatly between the other two acting as a catch to keep the two halves of the case together.

The interior of the case is missing any trace of the original mirror. The exterior surface of the casing disc is decorated with double lines of punched opposed triangles to form the outline of a rounded, open cross. Egan and Pritchard (1991) illustrate an example with similar decoration (p. 362, ref. 1715) from a context dated to 1270- 1350 AD. They note, however, that robust cast copper alloy mirror cases of this type were mass-produced during the Medieval period.

A similar example which can be found on the database is SUSS-606771.
