Title |
A cast bronze coin weight. |
||
Description |
English: A cast bronze coin weight. The weight is sub-square in plan and trapezoidal in section with rounded corners. The weight is possibly decorated on one face but the details are too feint to see except it is within a circular border. On the reverse are the letters VB beneath which are XX and three annulets.
The use of square weights tend to date to the mid 16th to c. 1632, more commonly they are found to date between c. 1620 and c. 1632 (Biggs, N. 1992 English Weights: An Illustrated Survey White House Publications p. 28). An Act of Parliament forbade the use of square weights after 1632 (Houben, G. 1978 European Coin – Weights for English Coins Boerhave Museum, Leiden, Holland). The denomination of the coin the weight was used for is unknown. |
