Summary
[edit]DescriptionA caddis fly (adult) - geograph.org.uk - 1187760.jpg |
English: A caddis fly (adult) This insect, resting upon a leaf of a willowherb plant, is an adult caddis fly (Order Trichoptera). Some, like the one shown here, belong to the family Leptoceridae, the "long-horned caddis flies"; this particular caddis fly has antennae that are much longer than the rest of its body.
Caddis flies share certain distinctive features with moths, and the two groups appear to be closely related. The larvae of most species of caddis fly develop in streams and pools; there, some species use a form of silk to cover themselves with small pieces of twig, stone, or other available material, to form a protective case. |
