Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A brussels armorial tapestry portiere (probably woven by Albert Auwercx)

height 10 ft.; width 8 ft. 3 in. (3.1 m; 2.5 m)

the crowned armorial shield in the center quartered with the arms of Salazar and possibly Gonzales, presumably Knights of Saint James of Compostela, and suspended over a canon decorated with flags, swords, armor and floral swags, floral swags with armor suspended from the armorial shields above and bound with blue ribbon, a crowned monogram in the top center, within trompe l'oeil border of acanthus leaves.

At least three other tapestries of this design were known to have existed and were documented in 1942. As Cavallo notes (op.cit.), armorial tapestries of this kind were often woven in sets to serve as curtains in doorways (portieres) and were popular among European nobility.
Date circa 1680-1700
