Hewas honored in many ways by his fellowcitizens, who delighted to pay tributes ofrespect to his literary eminence, the breadthof his public spirit, the faithfulness of hisservice, and the worth of his private char-acter. Mr. Bryant died in New York CityJune 12, 1878. WILLIAM HENRY SEWARD, thesecretary of state during one of themost critical times in the history of ourcountry, and the right hand man of Presi-dent Lincoln, ranks among the greateststatesmen America has produced. Mr. Seward entered the political arenaand in 1828 we find him presiding over aconvention in New York, its purpose beingthe nomination of John Quincy Adams for asecond term. He was married in 1824 andin 1830 was elected to the state senate.From 1838 lo 1842 he was governor of thestate of New York. Mr. Sewards next im-portant position was that of United Statessenator from New York. W. H. Seward was chosen by PresidentLincoln to fill the important office of thesecretary of state, and by his firmness anddiplomacy in the face of difficulties, he aidedin piloting the Union
