The original finding aid described this photograph as: [Complete] Scene Caption: A US Navy (USN) F-14D Tomcat fighter, Fighter Squadron 31 (VF-31), Tomcatters, Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia (VA), catches the cable as it lands on the USN Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) after an engagement exercise over the Alaskan military range. Currently the STENNIS and its crew are participating in a joint military Exercise NORTHERN EDGE 2004 (NE04) in the Gulf of Alaska. NE04 includes approximately 9,000 active duty, Reserve and Guard Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen from the United States and throughout the Pacific Region will train at military installations and various ranges during the multi-service exercise developed and hosted by Alaskan Command (ALCOM).
