120 A TRIP TO THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS trees and directly to the shore of the lavafield. There is a )3atli, too, across this lavafield leading to the crater. A bridge or twoover large fissures in the lava are all thatis required beyond the natural lava foot-ing. At intervals all over this lava fieldare spots from which hot steam arises and thereis no doubt but that a very few feet down thereis intense heat. The surface though is cool andperfectly safe for navigation, by pedestrians. Only one instance is recorded in moderntimes in which visitors across the lava field tothe inner crater came near to disaster by rea-son of the misbehavior of the volcano. Thisparty had walked across the upper crater overthe lava to the inner crater and charmed bythe strange scenes they had stayed on and onuntil far into the night. Returning by lanternlight across the path which they had traversedin their approach to the crater they suddenlyfound their way blocked by a large crack in theold lava, through which
