Summary
[edit]DescriptionA Smorgasbord for the Gulls (33426003354).jpg |
It's a common sight to see tens up to thousands of gulls following agricultural equipment as farmers are working the land. Tillage and other small soil disturbances bring worms, beetles, other insects, and grubs to the soil surface. Even small mammals, like mice and voles, can have their cover overturned, exposing them to become a meal for a hungry gull or hawk. Most of the gulls in this photo are Franklin's gulls (Leucophaeus pipixcan), but Ring-billed gulls are commonly seen exhibiting the same behavior. Photo Credit: Krista Lundgren/USFWS |
