Summary
[edit]DescriptionA Slate Fence - geograph.org.uk - 235118.jpg |
English: A Slate Fence. A popular 19th C mode of fencing, particularly in the vicinity of slate quarries and along or near to quarry railway lines which allowed slabs to be transported easily. Such slabs were often quarry waste. The lengths of slate were partially dug into the ground and their alignment maintained by two strands of wire, top and bottom, looped round each slate.Unfortunately, these fences are rapidly becoming an endangered species. Frequently, outsiders buying small holdings replace such fences with ranch style wooden fencing. Also, these days slate is expensive to replace. |
