45 38 It is interesting to note that the intensity of sound at the throat of the trumpetincreases again as the bearing approaches 180 degrees and gives a maximum. Such aneffect can be easily observed by fitting a stethoscope to the narrow end of the trumpetand listening by ear as the trumpet is rotated. When the trumpet is removed and the sound recorded by a microphone alone, anestimate of magnification is given. It was found that the ratio Maximum deflection with the trumpet ___ , . rDeflection without the trumpet which is a measure of amplitude magnification, since it has been shown in § 7 thatdeflection is proportional to amplitude. 426 DR. W. S. TUCKER AND MR. E. T. PARIS ON The diagram (fig. 18) shows the nature of the polar curve of amplitudes. Experimentswith sources of different pitches indicated that the higher the pitch the sharper thecurvature in the region of the zero bearing. For highly directive apparatus, therefore, every advantage is to be gained by using big trumpets.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 18. The Hot-Wire Microphone gives an easy method of testing the resonance frequenciesof trumpets, but the effect must not be complicated by using a resonant microphoneof the type described above. In this case the trumpet itself may be used as the resonatingcavity. A bare grid with an orifice of the type above described is fitted to the narrowend of the trumpet, as shown in fig. 19, and the amplifier is used with rectifier and
