Title |
a Roman trumpet brooch |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy Roman brooch of the trumpet type dating from AD 75-175. The trumpet head is plan and the upper bow is slender. In the centre of the bow is a hemispherical moulding, on the upper side of the bow only, which is decorated with worn acanthus petals. On the reverse of the bow, on the moulding are a pair of parallel, transverse grooves. Above and below the moulding there is a narrow collar, again on the upper side of the bow only. There is no other decoration. The lower bow is faceted. There is a hemispherical foot. Part of the catchplate survives, running the whole length of the lower bow. On the reverse of the trumpet head is a loop to hold the pin and spring mechanism. The pin and spring are missing. On the upper edge of the trumpet is a remnant of a pseudo hook or head loop. The brooch has a patchy, light green and brown patina which has flaked in places. It is 54.8mm long, 14.5mm wide and 32.4mm thick. It weighs 17.06gm. |
