Title
a Roman trumpet brooch
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy Roman brooch of the trumpet type, dating from AD 75-175. There is a full round acanthus moulding in the centre of the bow with a collar above and below. Unlike the moulding, these collars do not continue on the underside of the bow. Each collar has a narrow, central groove and the rim of each collar closest to the moulding is decorated with a number of very small, transverse grooves. The upper side of the lower part of the bow is divided into two facets and tapers towards the foot. There is a lateral groove below each of the facets. The foot is circular and has a single narrow groove running around the edge. There is a flared rim round the trumpet head, parts of which have broken away and are missing. The brooch is otherwise undecorated. On the reverse of the head is an integral loop to hold the pin mechanism; the mechanism and pin are both missing, as is part of the catch plate. The brooch displays a dark brown patina. It is 35.4mm long, 9.6mm wide and 21.9mm thick. It weighs 5.74gm.
