English: A complete, cast copper alloy Roman brooch of the trumpet type, dating from AD 75-175. There is a large acanthus moulding in the centre of the bow which is present on the outer side only and does not continue on to the inner side. Above and below this moulding is a collar decorated with three narrow grooves; these collars also do not continue on to the underside of the bow. Above the upper collar the bow flares out into a wide trumpet with a narrow, flat rim. On either side of this section of the bow, and continuing onto the back of the trumpet, is an indentation with a slightly raised rim. These indentations are in the shape of an elongated and curved teardrop with the wider end on the reverse of the trumpet. The central section of the bow is decorated at this point with three narrow, longitudinal grooves. Below the acanthus moulding the bow has two flat facets, rising into a narrow central ridge. Each facet is decorated with a longitudinal groove. There is a circular foot with two narrow grooves running around the rim. The upper edge of the trumpet carries the remains of a chain loop, most of which has broken away and is missing. On the front of the trumpet is a tubular mount to hold a copper alloy pin bar; the pin bar and the copper alloy pin remain in place but are immoveable owing to corrosion. The catch plate is also complete and remains in place. Traces of gilding remain on the bow, trumpet and catch plate. There is some reddish brown staining but the brooch otherwise displays a smooth, dark brown patina. It is 57.1mm long, 18.3mm wide and 29mm thick. It weighs 27.37gm.
