Title
a Roman trumpet brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch dating from about 75 - 175 AD. The brooch may have been discarded unfinished. The central seams, which run the length of the brooch are off centre and the designs are also out of position with one another, thus suggesting the moulds perhaps did not align correctly during production. The casting seams have not been trimmed and the catch plate (which is unusually thick) has no evidence of having been turned over to create a catch. The pin and axis bar are missing. The head of the brooch was found encased in pale orange clay. The soil of the area where it was found is not known. Careful cleaning revealed the the loop on the back of the head does have a perforation for the axis bar or spring. The brooch has a small trumpet head with thin uneven edges (perhaps mis-cast). The only decoration is the acanthus button with a thick collar above and below. The lower bow is unevenly faceted. The rounded foot bends forwards. The brooch has a light green patina. For reference see Hattatt's Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, page 328. The unfinished nature of the brooch suggests it may have been manufactured nearby.
