Title
A Roman pottery rim sherd from a Samian mortarium, Dragendorff 45 (late 2nd century - mid 3rd century).
Description
English: A Roman pottery rim sherd from a Samian mortarium, Dragendorff 45 (late 2nd century - mid 3rd century). This sherd comprises part of the rim with the open-mouthed lion spout that is typical of the Dragendorff 45 form. Webster describes this form as having a "near upright wall. There is an offset or overhang at the junction of the upper and lower walls. A spout, generally in the form of a moulded, open-mouthed lion, was applied to the outside of the upper wall. It is often surrounded by incised and radiating lines (as with this example)... The trituration grits, which give the mortarium its internal grinding surface, usually occupy only the lower part of the vessel." On the internal surface of this sherd there is one quartz trituration grit visible exposed by the slip.

Dimensions: weight: 62.33g.
